Definition

Tabuk is a city and region in northwest Saudi Arabia, bordering Jordan and the Gulf of Aqaba, that hosts the NEOM gigaproject zone and is being transformed from a remote military outpost into a major hub of tourism, technology, and economic development.

Overview

Tabuk Region covers approximately 139,000 square kilometres of northwest Saudi Arabia, with landscapes ranging from Red Sea coastline and coral reefs to mountainous terrain and desert plateaus. The city of Tabuk, with a population of approximately 600,000, has traditionally served as a military garrison town and agricultural centre, known for its fruit orchards and relatively cooler climate.

The region’s strategic importance has been transformed by NEOM, the USD 500 billion megacity project that occupies 26,500 square kilometres along the Gulf of Aqaba coastline within Tabuk Province. NEOM’s development has brought massive infrastructure investment to the region, including airport expansion, road construction, utilities, and workforce accommodation.

Beyond NEOM, Tabuk Region contains significant tourism potential including pristine Red Sea diving sites, mountain trekking, historical sites from various civilisations, and distinctive desert landscapes. The region is also an important node for the planned land bridge connecting the Gulf of Aqaba to the Red Sea tourism corridor.

Role in Vision 2030

Tabuk’s role in Vision 2030 has been fundamentally reshaped by NEOM. The region is transitioning from one of the Kingdom’s least economically developed areas into a centre of innovation, tourism, and advanced manufacturing. NEOM’s construction alone has generated tens of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in infrastructure investment in the region.

Beyond NEOM, Tabuk benefits from Vision 2030’s broader tourism development and the Red Sea tourism corridor, which creates opportunities for nature-based and adventure tourism that can diversify the regional economy and create employment for local communities.
