Saudi Arabia Concerts and Festivals
Guide to Saudi Arabia's booming concert and festival scene including MDL Beast Soundstorm, Riyadh Season, and the licensing framework enabling live music events.

Saudi Arabia has emerged as one of the fastest-growing live entertainment markets in the world since the lifting of the entertainment ban in 2016. From a country with virtually no public concerts or music festivals, the Kingdom now hosts hundreds of concerts annually, headlined by globally recognized artists, with the MDL Beast Soundstorm festival establishing itself as one of the largest music events in the Middle East.
The Entertainment Revolution
The establishment of the General Entertainment Authority (GEA) in 2016 marked the beginning of Saudi Arabia’s entertainment transformation under Vision 2030. Before this date, public concerts, cinemas, and mixed-gender entertainment were prohibited. The GEA was tasked with developing a comprehensive entertainment ecosystem, issuing licenses for events, setting standards, and attracting international content providers.
The pace of change has been remarkable. The number of licensed entertainment events grew from fewer than 100 in 2016 to over 5,000 annually by 2024. Music concerts, previously forbidden, have become a regular feature of Saudi social life, with international and Arabic artists performing across the Kingdom.
Soundstorm Festival
MDL Beast Soundstorm, held annually in Riyadh, is the flagship music festival and one of the largest in the Middle East. The multi-day electronic and popular music festival attracts over 700,000 attendees across its stages, featuring international headliners alongside regional and Saudi artists.
The festival, organized by MDL Beast (a Saudi entertainment company), takes place at a dedicated venue in Riyadh and features multiple stages, art installations, culinary experiences, and fashion activations. Soundstorm has drawn comparisons to Tomorrowland and Coachella in scale and production quality.
Riyadh Season and Jeddah Season
The seasonal entertainment festivals organized by the General Entertainment Authority have become major cultural events. Riyadh Season, running for several months each year, transforms the capital into an entertainment hub with concerts, theatrical performances, exhibitions, sporting events, and themed entertainment zones across multiple venues.
Jeddah Season focuses on the Red Sea coastal city, leveraging its waterfront and cultural heritage to create a distinct entertainment offering. Both seasons attract millions of visitors and significant international entertainment acts.
These seasonal festivals have been instrumental in changing domestic leisure patterns, providing alternatives to travelling abroad for entertainment and keeping consumer spending within the Saudi economy.
Concert Licensing Framework
The GEA issues entertainment licenses that cover venues, events, performers, and supporting services. The licensing process evaluates safety, content appropriateness, venue capacity, and operational capabilities. International artists and production companies work with licensed Saudi promoters and event managers to organize concerts.
The licensing framework has matured rapidly, with streamlined digital applications, clear guidelines, and predictable processing times. Foreign entertainment companies can operate in Saudi Arabia through partnerships with licensed Saudi entities or by obtaining their own entertainment activity licenses through MISA.
Venue Development
Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in entertainment venues. Purpose-built arenas, outdoor festival grounds, and cultural centres have been constructed across major cities. The Mohammed Abdu Arena in Riyadh (capacity 18,000) and the Jeddah Super Dome (capacity 15,000) host regular concert programming. Boulevard Riyadh City, a massive entertainment district, includes multiple performance venues integrated with dining, retail, and hospitality.
Qiddiya, the entertainment megaproject under development outside Riyadh, will include large-scale concert and festival venues designed to host the world’s biggest touring acts. The project aims to create a permanent entertainment infrastructure that reduces dependence on temporary and pop-up venues.
Business Opportunities
The concert and festival sector creates substantial business opportunities across the value chain. Event production, sound and lighting, stage construction, talent management, ticketing, hospitality, security, and digital media all represent growing markets. International live entertainment companies including Live Nation, AEG, and regional promoters have established operations or partnerships in the Kingdom.
Sponsorship of concerts and festivals has become a major marketing channel for consumer brands, telecommunications companies, and financial institutions targeting Saudi Arabia’s young, entertainment-engaged population.
Impact and Scale
The entertainment sector’s contribution to the Saudi economy has grown to exceed SAR 20 billion annually, including direct event revenue, tourism spending, and supporting industries. The sector has created tens of thousands of jobs, both permanent and event-related, with increasing Saudi participation in entertainment careers ranging from event management to music production, sound engineering, and artist management.
The transformation from entertainment prohibition to hosting some of the world’s largest music festivals in under a decade represents one of the most visible social and economic changes under Vision 2030.
