Definition

Diriyah Gate is a PIF-backed cultural, hospitality, and heritage mega-development centred on the historic Diriyah area northwest of Riyadh, transforming the birthplace of the first Saudi state into a world-class destination for heritage tourism, luxury hospitality, and high-end retail.

Overview

Diriyah, founded in 1446, served as the capital of the first Saudi state and is considered the cultural and historical heartland of the Kingdom. The At-Turaif district at its core was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. The Diriyah Gate Development Authority (DGDA) was established in 2017 to oversee the transformation of this area into a 14-square-kilometre mixed-use destination.

The masterplan includes the restoration and adaptive reuse of historic mud-brick structures, the construction of luxury hotels (Aman, Baccarat, Faena, and others), a major retail and dining precinct, museums, cultural institutions, open-air event spaces, and residential communities. The design ethos draws heavily on traditional Najdi architectural styles, using local materials and vernacular forms to create a development that honours its heritage context.

Diriyah Gate is also home to the Formula E Diriyah E-Prix street circuit, which has hosted rounds of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship since 2018, bringing international motorsport and media attention to the site. The development’s proximity to central Riyadh — approximately 15 minutes from downtown — positions it as both a tourist destination and an integrated extension of the capital’s urban fabric.

Role in Vision 2030

Diriyah Gate advances Vision 2030’s cultural and tourism objectives by creating a world-class heritage destination that celebrates Saudi identity and history. The project directly supports the target of increasing tourism’s GDP contribution and attracting international visitors who seek culturally authentic experiences. It also provides a template for heritage-led development that could be replicated at other historical sites across the Kingdom.

The project is a powerful expression of the Vibrant Society pillar, which emphasizes cultural pride, national identity, and the preservation of Saudi heritage. By investing billions of dollars in restoring and celebrating Diriyah’s history, the Kingdom signals that economic modernization and cultural preservation are complementary rather than competing priorities.
